Buying a computer

Best laptop for students and small businesses in Nigeria: how to choose

Short answer

For most students and small businesses in Nigeria, the best laptop is a recent mid-range model with at least 8GB of RAM, an SSD (256GB or more), a processor from the last few generations, and good battery life for power cuts. Spend on those four things before brand names, touchscreens or thin designs, and buy from a seller who gives a receipt, a genuine Windows licence and after-sales support.

Start with what you'll actually do on it

You mostly…What matters most
Write assignments, browse, attend online classes8GB RAM, SSD, good battery, comfortable keyboard
Run a shop or office: email, invoices, spreadsheets, POS8–16GB RAM, SSD, reliable build, good warranty and support
Accounting or large spreadsheets16GB RAM, a stronger processor, bigger screen
Engineering software, design, video editingStronger processor, 16GB+ RAM, dedicated graphics, larger SSD
Programming16GB RAM and a fast SSD; screen and keyboard comfort

Buying more power than you need wastes money; buying too little means you'll replace it early.

The specs that matter (and the ones that don't)

  • RAM (memory): 8GB is the sensible minimum for Windows 11 today. 16GB if you multitask heavily or use professional software. Check whether the RAM can be upgraded later; on many thin laptops it's soldered.
  • Storage: always an SSD, never a laptop with only a mechanical hard drive. 256GB is fine for documents and browsing; 512GB is more comfortable. See HDD vs SSD.
  • Processor: a recent Intel Core i5/Ultra 5 or AMD Ryzen 5 is the sweet spot for most people. Check the generation, not just "i5": an old i7 can be slower than a new i5.
  • Battery: with frequent outages, battery life really matters. Look for real-world reviews of the exact model, not just the advertised hours.
  • Screen: a Full HD (1920×1080) IPS screen is much easier on the eyes than an old HD panel, especially for long study sessions.
  • Build and keyboard: business lines (such as HP ProBook/EliteBook, Dell Latitude, Lenovo ThinkPad) are generally built to last and easier to repair.
  • Less important: touchscreens, very thin designs and RGB lighting add cost without helping most people.

New, UK-used (tokunbo) or refurbished?

  • New: full warranty and a fresh battery. Best for a business that needs reliability.
  • UK-used / tokunbo: good value if you check it properly, especially business models that were built to last. Expect to replace the battery sooner. Read how to check if a laptop is original before you pay.
  • Refurbished: ask what was repaired or replaced and get the warranty in writing.

Windows, Mac or Chromebook?

  • Windows works with almost every program used in Nigerian schools and offices, including accounting and engineering software.
  • MacBooks are well built with excellent battery life, but some specialised Windows-only programs won't run, and repairs and parts cost more.
  • Chromebooks depend heavily on the internet and web apps; check that every program you need works before you choose one.

Power protection in Nigeria

Power surges when public power returns, or when the generator is switched over, damage chargers and laptops every day. Budget for a surge protector at least, and a UPS for desktops and office setups. Use the original charger, or a good replacement with the right voltage and wattage.

For small businesses buying several laptops

  • Buy the same model for everyone where possible: easier support, spare chargers and set-up.
  • Make sure every laptop has a genuine Windows licence and, if you use them, genuine Microsoft 365 or other software licences.
  • Set up each laptop properly from day one: updates, antivirus, backups, a separate account per staff member, and a record of who has which laptop. Our small business IT checklist covers this.

Questions to ask the seller

  • Is it new, UK-used or refurbished, and can I see the serial number on the manufacturer's warranty page?
  • Is Windows genuine and activated, and which Office or other software is included (with licences)?
  • What's the battery health, and is the charger original?
  • What warranty do you give, in writing, and who handles repairs?
  • Will you set it up for me (updates, antivirus, my accounts) before I collect it?

A good seller answers these easily. If the answers are vague, keep looking.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best laptop for a university student in Nigeria?

For most students: a recent mid-range laptop with at least 8GB of RAM, an SSD of 256GB or more, a recent Core i5 or Ryzen 5 class processor and long battery life. Engineering or design students may need 16GB RAM and a stronger processor.

How much RAM do I need in a laptop?

8GB is the sensible minimum for Windows 11 today. 16GB is better for heavy multitasking, accounting software, design or programming.

Is a UK-used laptop a good idea?

It can be, especially business models built to last, if you check the serial number, real specs, battery health and condition before paying. Expect to replace the battery sooner than on a new laptop.

Should I buy a laptop with a hard drive (HDD)?

No. Choose a laptop with an SSD. Laptops with only a mechanical hard drive are noticeably slower in everyday use.
