Why is my laptop so slow? 7 safe checks before you pay for a repair

Short answer

A slow laptop is usually caused by too many programs starting with Windows, a nearly full drive, an old mechanical hard drive, too little memory (RAM), malware or overheating. You can check all of these yourself in about 20 minutes with built-in Windows tools. If your laptop still uses a hard drive (HDD), upgrading to an SSD is usually the biggest single speed improvement.

Quick steps

  1. Disable unneeded startup apps. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Startup apps and disable high-impact apps you don't need at start-up.
  2. Free up drive space. Make sure the C: drive has at least 10–15% free; use Storage cleanup recommendations.
  3. Check the drive type. In Task Manager → Performance, see whether the disk is an HDD or SSD and how busy it is.
  4. Check memory use. In Task Manager → Performance → Memory, see whether usage stays above 85–90%.
  5. Scan for malware. Run a full scan in Windows Security and remove programs you don't recognise.
  6. Install updates and restart. Install all Windows and browser updates, then restart.
  7. Check for overheating. Use the laptop on a hard surface with clear vents; loud fans and heat mean it needs cleaning.

Check 1: What starts with Windows

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then open Startup apps. Anything marked "High" impact that you don't need the moment you switch on (chat apps, updaters, game launchers, music apps) can be disabled. Disabling only stops it starting automatically; you can still open it yourself.

Check 2: Free space on your drive

Open File Explorer → This PC. If the C: drive bar is red, or has less than about 10–15% free, Windows slows down. Use Settings → System → Storage → Cleanup recommendations, empty the Recycle Bin, and move big videos and phone backups to an external drive or cloud storage.

Check 3: Is it a hard drive (HDD) or an SSD?

Open Task Manager → Performance and click your disk. It will say HDD or SSD. If it's an HDD and the disk often shows close to 100% use while you work, the drive is your bottleneck. This is the most common reason older laptops feel unbearably slow, and it's very fixable. See HDD vs SSD upgrade.

Check 4: Memory (RAM)

In Task Manager → Performance → Memory, look at how much is in use with your normal apps open (browser tabs included). If you're regularly above 85–90% on a laptop with 4GB, Windows is swapping to disk and everything feels slow. 8GB is a sensible minimum for Windows 10/11 today; 16GB is comfortable for heavy browsing, design or accounting software. Whether you can add RAM depends on the model; some laptops have memory soldered to the board.

Check 5: Malware and unwanted programs

  • Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection and run a Full scan.
  • In Settings → Apps → Installed apps, remove programs you don't recognise or don't use, especially "PC cleaners", toolbars and free VPNs you didn't install on purpose.
  • Pop-ups, a changed browser homepage or search engine, and new icons you didn't add are classic signs of adware.

Cracked ("free") versions of paid software are one of the most common ways malware gets onto laptops. If you've installed any, assume the laptop may be infected. Read how to protect your business from ransomware.

Check 6: Updates

Go to Settings → Windows Update and install everything, then restart. Also update your browser. A laptop that hasn't been restarted for weeks often speeds up after a proper restart (Start → Power → Restart, not just closing the lid).

Check 7: Heat and dust

If the fan is loud, the bottom is hot, or the laptop slows down after a few minutes of work, it may be overheating and slowing itself down to stay safe. Use it on a hard surface, keep the vents clear, and don't block them with a bed or cushion. Dust inside and dried thermal paste need a professional clean; don't push objects into the vents.

Should I reset Windows?

A fresh start (Settings → System → Recovery → Reset this PC) can fix a laptop that's slow because of years of clutter or adware. But back up first, and know that you'll need to reinstall your programs. If the laptop has a mechanical hard drive, a reset alone won't make it fast; do it together with an SSD upgrade. If you suspect ransomware or serious malware, don't reset yourself: get the files checked first so you don't back up the infection.

What usually fixes a slow laptop

What you foundWhat helps most
HDD at 100% oftenSSD upgrade (and a fresh, clean Windows install)
Memory constantly above 85%More RAM, if the model allows it
Many startup apps or adwareClean-up and malware removal
Hot and loudInternal cleaning and new thermal paste
Old, low-end processorSometimes a replacement is better value than an upgrade

When to bring it in

Bring it in if the checks above don't help, if you suspect malware or ransomware, if it overheats, or if you'd like an SSD or RAM upgrade done properly with your files moved across. We'll tell you honestly whether an upgrade is worth it for your model or whether a different laptop makes more sense.

Frequently asked questions

How can I speed up my slow laptop for free?

Disable unneeded startup apps in Task Manager, free up space on the C: drive, uninstall programs you don't use, run a full Windows Security scan, install updates and restart properly. Keep the vents clear so it doesn't overheat.

Will an SSD make my old laptop faster?

If your laptop has a mechanical hard drive, yes: an SSD usually makes start-up, opening apps and searching files several times quicker. It won't make a weak processor faster, but it removes the most common bottleneck.

How much RAM do I need for Windows 11?

8GB is a sensible minimum for everyday use today. 16GB is better for heavy multitasking, design or large spreadsheets.

Can a virus make my laptop slow?

Yes. Malware and adware use your processor, memory and internet in the background. Run a full scan and remove programs you don't recognise.
