Laptop won't turn on? What to check before you pay for repairs

Short answer

Most laptops that "won't turn on" have a power problem (charger, socket, battery or charging port) or are actually on but not showing a picture. Try a different socket and charger, do a 30-second hard reset, and test with an external monitor before you pay for anything. If there are still no signs of life, or you smell burning or see swelling, stop and bring it in.

Quick steps

  1. Check the socket. Plug something else into the same socket, or move to a wall socket you know works.
  2. Check the charger. Look for the charger's light; try a charger with the same voltage and connector if you have one.
  3. Do a hard reset. Unplug the charger, remove a removable battery, hold the power button for 30 seconds, then reconnect and try again.
  4. Charge for 30 minutes. Leave a fully drained laptop on charge for 30 minutes, then try again with the charger connected.
  5. Test with an external screen. If you hear the fan or see lights, connect a TV or monitor with HDMI to see if the laptop is actually running.

First, is it really dead, or just not showing a picture?

These are two different problems with different fixes, so look closely after you press the power button:

  • Completely dead: no power light, no charging light, no fan noise, no Caps Lock light. That points to power: the charger, the socket, the charging port, the battery or the power circuit on the motherboard.
  • Lights or fan come on, but the screen stays black: the laptop is probably running. That points to the screen, the screen cable, memory (RAM), or a Windows/macOS problem.
  • It starts, then switches off after a few seconds: often a failing battery, overheating protection, or a short on the board.

Write down exactly what you see. It saves time (and money) when you talk to a technician.

Safe checks you can do in 10 minutes

  1. Check the socket and the light. Plug something else into the same socket. In many Nigerian homes and offices the problem is the extension box, the stabiliser or a tripped socket, not the laptop. Try a wall socket you know works.
  2. Check the charger. Most chargers have a light on the brick or on the plug end. No light usually means a dead charger or cable. If you can, borrow a charger of the same wattage and connector (look at the label: for example 19.5V, 65W) and try again. Never use a charger with a different voltage.
  3. Do a hard reset. Unplug the charger. If the battery can be removed without tools, take it out. Hold the power button down for 30 seconds. Put the battery back (or leave it out), plug the charger in, and press power once.
  4. Leave it charging for 30 minutes. A completely drained battery sometimes needs time before the laptop will start. Then try again with the charger still connected.
  5. Listen and feel. Put your ear near the keyboard. A fan spinning, a click or a beep means it has power. Some laptops beep or flash a light in a pattern to report a fault; count the beeps or flashes and tell the technician.
  6. Test the screen. If you hear the fan or see lights, connect the laptop to a TV or monitor with an HDMI cable and press the display shortcut (Windows key + P on most Windows laptops). A picture on the TV means the laptop works and the fault is the screen or its cable.
  7. Try Caps Lock. Press it a few times. If the light toggles, the laptop is on and Windows may be stuck; hold the power button for 10 seconds to force it off, then start it again.

Stop and don't keep trying if you smell burning, see the case bulging or the touchpad lifting (a swollen battery), or if the laptop recently got wet. Unplug it and bring it in. Repeatedly powering a wet or shorted board can turn a repairable fault into a dead motherboard.

Things that make it worse

  • Opening the laptop yourself without the right tools. Modern laptops have fragile ribbon cables and clips; a torn cable adds to the bill.
  • Using a "universal" or wrong-voltage charger. A charger that's too strong can damage the board; one that's too weak can stop it charging.
  • Plugging straight into unstable power. Surges when the light comes back or when the generator is switched over are a common cause of dead chargers and boards. Use a surge protector or a UPS.
  • Repeated hard resets on a wet laptop. If liquid was involved, follow our liquid spill guide instead.

When to bring it in

Bring it in if none of the checks above bring it back, if the charger light is on but the laptop is completely dead, if it only works on the charger, or if there's any sign of liquid, burning or swelling. These need a technician with test equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my laptop not turning on even when it's charging?

If the charging light comes on but the laptop doesn't start, the fault is usually the charging port, the battery or the power circuit on the motherboard. Try a 30-second hard reset with the charger unplugged. If it still won't start, it needs a technician to test the board.

How do I know if my laptop charger is bad?

Look for the light on the charger. If it's off on a socket that works, or flickers when you move the cable, the charger or cable is likely faulty. Testing with a charger of the same voltage and connector confirms it.

Can a dead laptop be fixed?

Usually, yes. Most "dead" laptops have a faulty charger, port, battery or a repairable board fault. Even when the laptop itself can't be saved economically, the data on the drive can often be recovered.

Will I lose my files if my laptop won't turn on?

Not necessarily. Your files are on the storage drive, which is often fine even when the laptop won't start. Ask for the drive to be checked and your data copied before any major repair.
