Liquid spilled on my laptop: what to do in the first 10 minutes

Short answer

Switch the laptop off immediately by holding the power button, unplug the charger, don't switch it on again, and turn it upside down in a tent shape so liquid can drain. Wipe what you can, don't use heat or rice, and get it to a technician as soon as possible. The sooner the inside is cleaned, the better the chance of a full recovery.

Quick steps

  1. Switch it off. Hold the power button until the laptop turns off.
  2. Unplug everything. Disconnect the charger and all accessories.
  3. Remove the battery if possible. Only if it comes out without tools; don't open the case.
  4. Drain it upside down. Open the lid wide and stand the laptop like a tent, keyboard facing down, on a towel.
  5. Wipe and leave it off. Wipe the outside with a dry cloth; don't switch it on, charge it, heat it or put it in rice.
  6. Get it cleaned. Take it to a technician the same day if possible and say what was spilled.

The first 10 minutes, step by step

  1. Turn it off now. Hold the power button until it switches off. Don't wait to save your work. Electricity plus liquid is what causes short circuits.
  2. Unplug everything. The charger, USB drives, mouse, everything.
  3. Remove the battery if it comes out without tools. Most modern laptops don't allow this; don't open the case.
  4. Turn it upside down. Open the lid as wide as it safely goes and stand it like a tent (keyboard facing down) on a towel, so liquid drains out of the keyboard instead of into the board.
  5. Wipe gently. Use a dry, lint-free cloth or tissue on the outside and keyboard. Don't shake it hard; that spreads liquid around.
  6. Leave it off. Don't test it "just to see". Most spill damage happens when a wet laptop is switched on or charged.
  7. Bring it in. The same day if you can. Tell the technician what was spilled and when.

What NOT to do

  • Don't switch it on or charge it to check if it still works.
  • Don't put it in rice. Rice doesn't pull liquid out from under chips and leaves dust and starch behind. It only wastes time while corrosion starts.
  • Don't use a hair dryer or put it in the sun. Heat can warp parts and push liquid deeper; it also dries sugary drinks into sticky residue.
  • Don't open it up unless you are trained. Ribbon cables tear easily and you can short the battery.

Water vs tea, soft drinks and other liquids

LiquidWhy it matters
Clean waterLeast harmful, but still conducts electricity and corrodes over time
Tea or coffee with sugar or milkLeaves sticky residue that keeps conducting and corroding
Soft drinks and juiceSugary and acidic: corrosion starts fast; sticky keys are common
Beer, palm wine, alcoholSugars and acids; treat like soft drinks
Salty or soapy waterVery corrosive; needs urgent cleaning

Even if the laptop seems fine after a spill, residue can keep corroding the board for days or weeks. That's why a professional clean is worth it even when it still turns on.

What happens in the workshop

A technician opens the laptop, disconnects the battery, inspects the board for liquid and corrosion, and cleans the affected areas properly (usually with isopropyl alcohol and a brush, or an ultrasonic cleaner for badly affected boards). Then the board is dried and tested, and damaged parts such as the keyboard are replaced if needed. If the laptop can't be saved economically, we can usually still recover the data from the drive.

Signs of hidden liquid damage later

A laptop that survived a spill can still develop problems days or weeks later as residue corrodes the board. Watch for:

  • Keys that stick, repeat or stop working.
  • The battery suddenly draining fast or not charging.
  • Random shut-downs, especially when the laptop is moved.
  • Lines or flicker on the screen, or the touchpad acting on its own.
  • A sour or burnt smell near the vents.

If you notice any of these after a spill, stop using it and bring it in. Mention the spill: it changes where the technician looks first.

Is liquid damage covered by warranty?

Standard manufacturer warranties usually exclude liquid damage. Some extended or accidental-damage plans, and some insurance policies, do cover it, so check your paperwork before you pay for a repair. If your laptop belongs to your employer, tell your IT person straight away.

How to reduce the risk next time

  • Keep drinks on a different table, or at least on the side away from your hand and the charger.
  • Use a keyboard cover if you often work while eating or drinking.
  • Back up your files regularly (see our small business IT checklist for a simple backup routine).

When to bring it in

As soon as possible after any spill, even if the laptop seems to work. If it was a sugary or salty liquid, or it got into the keyboard, treat it as urgent.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put my wet laptop in rice?

No. Rice doesn't remove liquid from inside the laptop and can leave starch and dust behind. Switch it off, drain it upside down, and get it cleaned by a technician as soon as possible.

My laptop works after the spill. Do I still need to bring it in?

It's a good idea. Residue, especially from sugary drinks, can keep corroding the board for days or weeks, so a laptop that works today can fail later. A clean now is usually cheaper than a board repair later.

How long should I wait before turning on a laptop that got wet?

Don't rely on waiting. The safest option is not to switch it on at all until it has been opened and cleaned, because drying alone doesn't remove residue.

Can data be recovered from a water-damaged laptop?

Often, yes. The storage drive is frequently unharmed even when the motherboard is damaged, so files can usually be copied to a new drive or laptop.
