Short answer
Replace your laptop battery when it lasts much less than it used to (for example under two hours of light use), when Windows says "plugged in, not charging", when the laptop only works on the charger, or immediately if the battery is swollen. You can check battery health yourself in a few minutes on Windows or Mac. A swollen battery is a fire risk: stop using the laptop and bring it in.
Signs your laptop battery is worn out
Laptop batteries are lithium-ion. They wear out with every charge cycle and with heat, so after a few years almost every battery holds much less charge than when it was new. The common signs:
- It used to last most of a morning; now it lasts an hour or two.
- The percentage jumps (for example from 40% straight to 5%) or the laptop dies without warning.
- Windows shows "Plugged in, not charging" or the battery icon has a red cross.
- The laptop only works when the charger is connected.
- macOS shows "Service Recommended" next to the battery.
- The case is bulging, the touchpad is lifting or the keyboard is pushed up. That is a swollen battery (see the safety section below).
How to check battery health yourself
On Windows
- Right-click the Start button and open Terminal (or Command Prompt).
- Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
- Open the file it mentions (usually in your user folder, called battery-report.html).
- Compare Design capacity with Full charge capacity. If the full charge capacity is well under half of the design capacity, the battery is badly worn.
On a Mac
Open System Settings → Battery and click the (i) next to Battery Health, or hold Option and click the Apple menu → System Information → Power to see the Cycle count and Condition. "Service Recommended" means it's time for a new battery.
Swollen battery: stop using it
A swollen (bloated) lithium battery can catch fire, especially if it's pressed, punctured or charged. If your laptop's case is bulging or the touchpad is lifting, switch it off, unplug it, don't charge it again, keep it away from anything flammable, and bring it in. Never press the bulge down or try to pierce it.
Swelling is often caused by age, heat, and cheap or faulty chargers. Leaving a laptop charging on a bed or a cushion, where it can't breathe, makes heat worse.
Original vs compatible batteries
| Original (manufacturer) | Good compatible battery | |
|---|---|---|
| Fit and connector | Exact | Exact, if it's the right part number |
| Capacity | As designed | Should match the label; cheap ones often overstate it |
| Safety circuits | Manufacturer's | Varies by maker: buy from a source you trust |
| Availability | Can take time for some models | Usually easier to find |
What matters most is the exact part number for your laptop and a reliable source. A no-name battery that's sold far below normal prices often has lower real capacity and weaker protection circuits. We tell you which type we're fitting before we fit it.
How to make a new battery last longer
- Keep it cool. Heat is the main enemy. Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface and keep the vents clear.
- Use the right charger with the correct voltage and wattage for your model.
- Protect it from power surges. Surges when public power returns or when the generator is switched over can damage chargers and charging circuits. A surge protector or UPS helps.
- Use your laptop's battery-care setting if it has one (many Dell, Lenovo, HP, Asus and Apple laptops can stop charging at around 80% when you're mostly plugged in).
- Don't store it flat. If you won't use the laptop for weeks, leave the battery around half charged.
What to expect when you replace it
For most popular models the battery is replaced the same day when the part is available. Some laptops have the battery glued in or built into the palm-rest, which takes longer. We confirm the part, the price and the timing first, and we test the new battery's charging before you go.
When to bring it in
Immediately if the battery is swollen. Otherwise when it lasts too little for your day, when it shows "not charging", or when the laptop dies unexpectedly. If the laptop won't start at all, start with our guide: laptop won't turn on.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my laptop battery needs replacing?
If it lasts much less than before, dies without warning, shows "plugged in, not charging", or only works on the charger, it's likely worn out. On Windows, run powercfg /batteryreport and compare Full charge capacity with Design capacity.
Is a swollen laptop battery dangerous?
Yes. A swollen lithium battery can catch fire if it's pressed, punctured or charged. Switch the laptop off, stop charging it and bring it in for replacement.
Can I use my laptop without the battery?
Some laptops run on the charger alone, but you lose protection against power cuts and the laptop may run slower. With Nigeria's frequent outages, a working battery or a UPS is strongly recommended.
How long does a laptop battery last?
It depends on how it's used and how hot it gets, but most laptop batteries lose noticeable capacity after two to four years of daily use.
