Why does my laptop switch off immediately after turning on?
If it starts and then goes off within seconds, it's usually a battery or charger that can't hold the load, or a part inside that the computer refuses to start with.
It usually needs a technician, but it's rarely an emergency. The checks below are safe to try first.
Does this sound like yours?
- It comes on, then goes off after a few seconds
What usually causes it
- Weak battery or charger that can't hold it up
- Memory (RAM) or another part failing its start-up check
- Overheating protection kicking in early (often a blocked or dead fan)
Most likely first. A hands-on test confirms which one it is.
What you can safely check
- Try it on the charger with the battery charged for at least an hour
- On a desktop, try a different wall socket without the extension box or stabiliser
Please don't
- Don't keep switching it on and off. Each attempt stresses a part that's already weak
