WhatsApp Business app vs WhatsApp Business API: which do you need?

Short answer: The WhatsApp Business app is free and perfect for chatting with customers from one or a few phones. The WhatsApp Business Platform (often called the WhatsApp Business API) is Meta's official route for messaging at scale: broadcasts to opted-in customers using approved templates, many team members in one inbox, and automated messages, with Meta charging per template message. Switch when broadcast lists and manual replies no longer keep up.

The WhatsApp Business app

The free app (on Android and iPhone) gives you a business profile with address, hours and catalogue, quick replies, labels, greeting and away messages, and broadcast lists. It's where most Nigerian businesses start, and for a small shop it may be all you need.

Its limits show as you grow:

  • Broadcast lists only reach people who saved your number in their contacts. Others don't receive the message.
  • A broadcast list holds a limited number of contacts, so large audiences mean many lists and a lot of manual work.
  • Few devices: one phone plus a handful of linked devices; hard for a team to share and see who replied to whom.
  • No real automation or integration with your invoices, website or store.
  • Risk to the number: sending lots of similar messages, especially to people who didn't expect them, can get the number restricted or banned.

The WhatsApp Business Platform (API)

Meta's platform lets software like ENB connect your number and send and receive messages through Meta's systems.

  • Templates: to start a conversation (or message someone who hasn't written to you in the last 24 hours), you use a template message that Meta approves in advance, in categories such as marketing, utility (order and payment updates) and authentication.
  • 24-hour customer service window: when a customer messages you, you can reply freely for 24 hours.
  • Opt-in: customers must have agreed to receive WhatsApp messages from you.
  • Scale and teams: broadcasts to thousands of opted-in customers, many team members in one inbox, and automated messages from your systems (invoice sent, order shipped).
  • Pricing: Meta charges per template message, at rates that depend on the category and the customer's country. Check Meta's current WhatsApp pricing page for Nigeria.

Can I keep my number?

A number can be on the app or on the platform, not both at once. You can move a number from the app to the platform (chat history on the phone doesn't move), or use a new number for the platform and keep your existing one on the app. Many businesses use a dedicated number for the platform.

Getting the most from either

  • Collect opt-in on purpose: a tick box on your signup form, or a "Message us on WhatsApp" link that customers tap. Our WhatsApp link generator makes one.
  • Keep templates useful: order updates, reminders and genuinely relevant offers. Mass promotional blasts lead to blocks and reports, which hurt your number's quality rating.
  • Reply fast inside the 24-hour window.

WhatsApp on ENB

ENB's WhatsApp features run on the official platform and are on paid plans: broadcasts with approved templates, a shared chat inbox, invoices and receipts on WhatsApp, and WhatsApp steps in automations. Connecting a number is being switched on for new customers once Meta completes our business verification; sharing invoices and receipts to WhatsApp from your phone already works on paid plans. See the current WhatsApp status.

Signs you've outgrown the app

  • You spend more than an hour a day copying the same message to customers.
  • Customers complain they didn't get your broadcast (because they never saved your number).
  • Several staff need to reply, and nobody knows who answered whom.
  • You want order, payment or appointment updates to send automatically.
  • Your number has been warned or temporarily restricted for sending too many messages.

How to get WhatsApp opt-in properly

  • A tick box on your signup form: "Send me updates and offers on WhatsApp".
  • A click-to-chat link or QR code ("Message us to join our WhatsApp updates"); the customer starting the chat is a clear signal, and you can confirm with a reply.
  • At checkout or booking: ask, and record the answer.

Keep a record of when and how each person opted in, and make opting out easy (for example "Reply STOP").

Key takeaways

  • The free app is ideal for one-to-one chats and small volumes.
  • Broadcasts on the app only reach people who saved your number.
  • The Business Platform needs opt-in, approved templates and pays Meta per template message.
  • A number can't be on the app and the platform at the same time.
  • Switch when manual broadcasting and team replies no longer keep up.

Frequently asked questions

Is the WhatsApp Business API free?

No. Meta charges per template message, by category and country. Replies within the 24-hour customer service window are handled differently; check Meta's current pricing.

Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and API on the same number?

Not at the same time. You can move a number from the app to the platform, or use a separate number.

Do I need approval to send WhatsApp templates?

Yes. Template messages are reviewed by Meta before you can use them.

Why don't my broadcast messages reach everyone?

On the WhatsApp Business app, broadcasts only reach people who saved your number in their contacts.
